The City Hall wishes that October 18 becomes a day with significance for Timisoara

The Deputy Mayor, Adrian Orza proposed the declaration of October 18 as a day of local importance.

According to the essay that will be read by the local councilors, on October 18, 1716, Prince Eugene of Savoy enters triumphant into the city of Timisoara, freeing the city of 164 years of Turkish domination. This action is considered by historians a masterpiece of military skills of the army's commander, Eugene of Savoy.

After this moment, Timisoara had a development on all levels, becoming a city of premiers:

  • 1718 - certification of the beer factory, the oldest of the present territory of Romania;
  • 1728 - the beginning of channeling Bega, the oldest navigable channel; on the present territory of Romania;
  • 1745 - the construction of the Municipal Hospital;
  • 1760 - the first city of monarchy with illuminated streets;
  • 1771 - the first newspaper that appeared on the present territory of Romania and also the first German newspaper in Southeastern Europe, "Temeswarer Nachrichten ";
  • 1854 - the first telegraph service in a Romanian city;
  • 1855 - the first city of the Habsburg Monarchy with streets illuminated by gas;
  • 1881 - the first telephone network on the present territory of Romania;
  • 1884 - the first city in the Continental Europe with electric illuminated streets;
  • 1886 - the first rescue station on the present territory of Hungary and Romania;
  • 1895 - the first asphalted street in Romania;
  • 1897 - the first film screening in Romania;
  • 1899 - the first electric tram in Romania
