Timisoara hopes to become European Capital of Culture in 2021 using an important lobby and also a consortium has been formed to support Timisoara City Hall's efforts. In January 2010 the Mayor, Mr. Gheorghe Ciuhandu announced that Timisoara will apply at the Ministry of Culture to become European Capital of Culture in 2021.
