Preliminary results of the census of 2011

Romania's population decreased to nearly 19 million, a figure that has not been registered since 1966, according to the preliminary results published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). Of the total resident population of Romania, 10 million people have the residence in cities and towns (52.8%), and nearly 9 million people live in communes (47.2%).

22 counties have registered under 400.000 inhabitants accounting for 35.6% of the population, 17 counties had a population between 400.000 to 700.000 inhabitants concentrating 47.9% and only 2 counties exceeded 700.000 inhabitants. In Bucharest, according to the NIS, live about 1.7 million people.

The counties with the largest population are:

  • Prahova - 735.900 inhabitants
  • Iasi - 723.600 inhabitants
  • Cluj - 659.400 inhabitants
  • Timis - 649.800 inhabitants
  • Constanta - 630.700 inhabitants
  • Dolj - 618.300 inhabitants
  • Suceava - 614.500 inhabitants 

Counties with a high degree of urbanization are: Hunedoara (74.1%), Brasov ( 71.2%), Constanta (67.9%), Cluj (65.9%), while counties with lowest urban population: Giurgiu (27.9%), Dambovita (28.3%), Teleorman(31.3%), Neamt and Calarasi (with 35.0%).

Provisional results of the census reveal that, of the total population, 16.870.000million persons, 88.6% declared themselves Romanians.

Among other ethnic groups which recorded a total of over 20.000 people there are:

 • Ukrainians, 51.700 in 2011 from 61.098 in 2002 and 65.472 in 1992.

 • Germans, 36.900 in 2011 from 59.764 in 2002 and 119.462 in 1992

 • Turks, 28.200 in 2011 from 32.098 in 2002 and 29.832 in 1992.

 • Russians - Lipovani 23.900 in 2011 from 35.791 in 2002 and 38.606 in 1992.

 • Tartars, 20.500 in 2011 from 23.935 in 2002 and 24.596 in 1992.
