Improvement of the infrastructure and economic performance of the inland waterways navigation is a major objective, which the European Commission is aiming for by supporting the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.

The objective of this project is to modernize the European river transport by developing a new type of container ship, with alternative power train diesel and electric, for freight transport by inland waterways from Rotterdam to Constanta, and to create a customized integrated logistics system concept.

West Regional Development Agency as regional authority and project partner, supports the activity by attracting major players in the logistics and transport, organized an interesting debate in West Region on the current situation and the potential of waterway transport sectors for the economic sectors in West Region.

The event took place at West RDA headquarters, on June 10, 2015, from 10.00 o'clock.

The agenda of the event can be found here...

More information can be found at: http://www.news-fp7.eu/. It was necessary to create NEWS project because the cargo transport on inland waters is not used to its full potential, the transport on the Danube is only 10-20% of the Rhine. Thus, NEWS will support the goal of EU Strategy for the Danube Region to increase inland cargo transport by 20% in 2020 compared to 2010 making transport more efficient in terms of cost and resources.

The existence of the patent for a new type of container ship, the ship that will be developed within the project, will provide economic and environmental benefits and the transport and logistics chain in Danube region will be integrated within the cargo transportation on the rivers in EU.
