The largest prehistoric fortification in Europe located near Timisoara
Only a few kilometers away from Timisoara, in Cornesti village, lay the ruins of the largest prehistoric fortification in Europe. A team of archaeologists from Banat Museum together with specialists from abroad, have started an extensive research program hoping to find here in the next years information about population who occupied these territories and how they have evolved over time.
Based on evidence on carbon-14 analysis, the fortification is clearly dated in the second half of the second millennium BC, the late Bronze Age. A team of archaeologists currently search the soil structure doing field research, magnetic prospecting and excavations. According to them, in a fortress from Bronze Age they found another fortress belonging to the late Neolithic and outside the ditches there were found burned rectangular structures, showing that the fortification had a violent end.
